Heroes, Villains, and Renegades—usually shortened to HVR—is a persistent online superhero themed role-playing game created and operated by Cat Castle Games. Players create original supers, collect Power cards and equipment, build combat loadouts, explore patrol locations, challenge rivals, join Leagues, and take part in cooperative and competitive events.
What kind of game is HVR?
HVR is built around an ongoing character rather than a campaign you finish and discard. Your account retains its character identity, collection, level, skills, relationships, and history between sessions. Some activities are comfortable to play alone, while other parts of the world are deliberately social: public raids ask many players to attack a shared threat, Leagues organize long-term teams, and Arenas or League Wars create recurring competition.
The game can be played in a web browser, with mobile versions also available. It is free to play. Optional purchases exist, but the central activity is still playing and developing a persistent character over time.
The design principles behind the game
Identity matters
A character is more than a combat total. Name, alignment, appearance, biography, League, rivals, collection, and the way a player participates all contribute to who that super becomes.
Collections create choices
Power cards establish base statistics, while equipment adds typed damage, defenses, and special effects. Progress expands the number of useful choices rather than reducing every decision to one universal best item.
The world keeps moving
Patrols, raids, seasonal towns, Arenas, wars, and other live activities give players different reasons to return. An unusual battlefield can make an overlooked item or alternate loadout suddenly relevant.
Community has memory
Persistent games are shaped by the people who inhabit them. HVR includes cooperation, rivalry, player-run Leagues, communication, and a Hall of Heroes that remembers community members who have passed away.
